Hilda-Judith Aucar was born in Cuba and migrated to the United States with her family during her teenage years. With a wide range of interests, Judith has made a significant impact in the fields of teaching, administration, and community service. A graduate of Good Counsel College (now known as the College of White Plains), she holds a Master of Arts in Spanish, Hispanic Culture, and Literature from New York University (NYU), a Master of Education from St. John’s University, and a Professional Diploma in Supervision and Administration from Iona College.
Judith taught Spanish in the Norwalk Public Schools for 30 years, retiring in 2008. For the final 25 years of her career, she served as the Chair of the World Language Department at Brien McMahon High School.
In addition to her teaching career, Judith has dedicated the past 46 years to serving as the Deputy Director of El Centro Hispano, Inc. in White Plains. During this time, she chaired various fundraising events for the Latino community, supervised all educational programs at the Center, and volunteered her translating and interpreting services for numerous institutions and events supporting Hispanic individuals. Judith was also involved in preparing grants and fundraising materials and co-hosted the television series “El Centro Hispano Informa” for over 10 years.
Judith has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship to Mexico, a NYS Governor’s Award for Outstanding Hispanics, an Excellence Award in Spanish from Pace University, and a Fellowship from St. John’s University. She has been listed several times in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Tufts University honored her for Outstanding Teaching, and she received the Education Award from the Fund for Excellence. In 2000, she was awarded the Community Service Award from the Hispanic Democrats of Westchester, and in 2001, she received the Humanitarian Award from the White Plains Rotary Club. In 2002, she earned the YWCA Salute to Women and Racial Justice Outstanding Achievement Award for Human Services, as well as the St. Bernard’s Church Commitment and Dedication Award. In 2004, Judith was inducted into the YWCA Hall of Fame.
In 2013, she was honored by the Norwalk Public Library for her contributions to the Norwalk School System. In 2019, she received recognition from the Westchester County Board of Legislators for her outstanding contributions and civic activities as the Deputy Director of El Centro Hispano. Most recently, in March 2025, Judith, along with the women in the administration team of El Centro Hispano, was honored by Jewel Williams Johnson, the Westchester County Legislator for District 8, in celebration of Women's History Month.
Judith has also served on several committees and boards in the City of White Plains. She was a member of the White Plains Human Rights Commission, the Superintendent’s Restructuring Committee, and the American Cancer Society Education Committee. Most recently, she represented El Centro at the 2024 Downtown Revitalization Initiative and participated in the City of White Plains Tree Planting Program. Judith currently serves on the Scholarship Committee at El Centro Hispano, the White Plains Hospital Health Community Initiative, and the New York Presbyterian Hospital Westchester Behavioral Health Community Advisory Board.
In July 2024, after the passing of her best friend and co-worker of 47 years, Isabel E. Villar—the founding Executive Director of El Centro Hispano—Judith assumed the role of Executive Director of El Centro Hispano Isabel Elsa Villar. In this capacity, she continues to honor Isabel’s legacy and remains committed to serving those in need within the community.
Judith is also the author of “Foreign Language Acquisition in a Multicultural School Community” and “Languages and Lifestyles: A Curricular Blueprint for a Multicultural Class.”
